Dear brothers and sisters,

Sergei in Berkeley
Two weeks ago Sergei Boutenko gave a delightful talk at our new facility. He is the son of world teacher Victoria Boutenko author of 12 Steps to Raw Foods and so many other useful treatises. His theme was the true miracle foods - parsley, lettuce, kale, celery and chard along with edible wild plants. Blended into a green drink, they are of unsurpassed healing power.

We must say that even more than the message we were impressed with the speaker. He was alive. He was respectful. He was polite and courteous. Moreover, he bubbled with aliveness. How attentive he was to the concerns of people in the audience. How graciously did he address their queries.

We couldn't help but think that this young man of the coming, bright generation represents the hope of this America. We had to laugh when we compared him with the talking heads who are contesting to lead you. Last week they treated America to another rumination on the border fence. Take a look in their eyes! Is there anyone home?! Yet we are hopeful, Sergei is the proof that the live food movement can emerge from the kitchen on to the stage of life. He embodies the sparkling, bubbling, irrepressible life force, the energy that this country so desperately needs to regenerate itself. History is calling upon you. They've fumigated your almonds! We suggest you repay that kindness by making Abraham Lincoln's prophesy come true:
That this nation, under G-d, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

The Latest From The United States of Pasteurization

Cornucopia Meets With Almond Board to Discuss Raw Almond Compromise: Truly Raw Almonds Would Be Allowed with Warning Label

On February 13, The Cornucopia Institute's Codirectors held a phone conference with representatives from the Almond Board of California to discuss a proposal made by Cornucopia to resume the sale of untreated raw almonds. A strong outpouring of concern to the USDA Secretary, from growers and consumers prompted the Department's intervention in asking the ABC to meet with Cornucopia.

Under the Cornucopia proposal, raw almonds would carry a warning label alerting consumers to the fact that they were not pasteurized, much like the label that appears on containers of fruit juices sold in many states. Cornucopia also requested an exemption for organic almond producers, due to the range of their management practices that seem to reduce the threat of Salmonella contamination and the fact that organic almond growers have never been implicated in any case of food contamination.

The proposal appeared to garner little, even though high-level staff at the USDA's Washington headquarters had expressed some interest in the plan when they were briefed on it by Cornucopia late last year.

"We were disappointed that no one on the call from the Almond Board or its staff expressed any concern or compassion for the family farmers suffering severe economic distress from the rule or for consumers deprived of their choice in the marketplace," said Cornucopia's Will Fantle. "We believe we offered a reasonable proposal, but Almond
Board members seemed more interested in convincing us of the soundness of their decision to fumigate or steam-treat raw almonds," Fantle noted.
(As of the publication of this story The Cornucopia Institute is still engaged in discussions with the Almond Board.)
Cornucopia is now canvassing the broad community of almond stakeholders that it has been working with on this issue, including consumers, farmers, retailers and product manufacturers about the next step. Many have been urging the group to initiate a lawsuit seeking to overturn the controversial almond rule. In that regard Cornucopia has been meeting with their legal team in researching the option of filing of a lawsuit overturning the rule. A decision on the legal option will be made in the next few weeks.

In Berkeley We Call It Freedom Butter

We invite you then to open a jar and spread our almond butter on a slice of apple. Experience its texture and savor its aroma. Taste its whole bodied flavor. Maybe it will inspire you with the wisdom of John Muir, the courage of Martin Luther King Jr. and the genius of Steve Wozniak. This is the ethos of Berkeley and we invite you to partake of it.
Here in the sixties, you spoke for brothers and sisters everywhere. When circumstances require, you will speak out again.

Freedom Butter, in its aliveness, is an intimation of this America can be.

Living Tree Alive Chocolate Syrup

Oh, the joy of pure chocolate sweetness -- and without the unhealthy sugar! This is simply divine. I would feel proud serving this to my nephews and niece, and I feel almost devilish as I drizzle it over a generous slathering of the brazil nut butter (also made by Living Tree). I love that I can satisfy my sweet tooth without negatively affecting my health - and without chemical sweeteners. YUM.

Annet's Ecstatic Chocolate Pie

Recipe for a Delicious Raw Chocolate Pie
By Annet van Dorsser

Raw Chocolate Pie

This is a great pie for your friends and family. Don't tell them it is raw. Ask first if they it. You will see the surprise on their face, when you tell the pie is raw and... you will definitely have new fans for your raw food diet (if you hadn't yet).
By the way, did you know that raw chocolate is very healthy? It contains a lot of nutrients, like magnesium, silicon and many anti-oxidants. Chocolate also stimulates hormones.

Ingredients for the crust:
1/2 cup raw cacao powder
1/2 cup carob powder
1 cup almond flour
1/2 cup agave nectar
1 cup cacao butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
Ingredients for the filling:
1 cup cacao powder
1 cup carob powder
1 1/2 cup agave nectar
1 cup coconut butter
For decoration:
shredded coconut
optional: 1 banana, goji berries, raisins and a walnut

Make almond flour by blending dry almonds in your blender until fine. Don't blend to a paste. Mix all crust ingredients by hand into a dough. Press the dough evenly into your tart pan. We use a silicon tart pan.
Chill in the fridge for at least an hour. Blend all the filling ingredients until very smooth by hand or in a blender. Make a second layer on the chilled cake crust. Garnish with shredded coconut if you like. Press gently so that it doesn’t fall off later.
Place your pie back in the fridge and chill for at least another hour. Remove the tart pan.
Before serving, you can decorate the pie, if you like. We used a banana, goji berries, raisins and a walnut.

Raw Organic Olive Oil

750ml Alive, Organic Olive Oil - Unheated, Unfiltered, UNPRESSED, Extra Virgin

I gave some of your olive oil to my sister-in-law. Instead of a wine-tasting, she had an olive oil tasting party. She had friends bring olive oils from Italy and all over Europe. They did a blindfold taste test...hid the bottles and poured oils in dishes and tasted with bread. LIVING TREE Olive Oil was unanimously voted THE BEST Olive oil. They were all surprised to learn that it was a US made olive oil that they had chosen by taste alone. Just wanted to share that story with you. Yours is the only olive oil I have used for over 6 years now. Mm-mm! Thanks from,

Calling All Teens

The Raw Lifestyle Film Festival and Green-LA are sponsoring a scholarship for elementary and high school students.
10 students will be selected based on the following criteria:
5 who write essays (maximum 1,000 words) and
5 who make a 8-10 minute film on "Green Solutions for an Ailing Species"

Winners will receive passes to the film screenings at the 2008 Raw Lifestyle Film Festival and the Friday night (21st of March) Opening Reception and Ceremony at the Grand Theatre, downtown LA.
In addition on Saturday, they will be presented on stage to meet Jennifer Mattox and other filmmakers of the film "All Jacked Up" following the screening of the film.

Dorit appreciates any assistance in getting the word out to as many students and parents as possible so we can involve them in taking charge of their lives in a sustainable, responsible and fun filled way and as an antidote to the despondency and rage that most teenagers are experiencing.

Students who wish to take part are encouraged to email tony@green-LA.com with the subject line: Raw Lifestyle Film Festival Sustainable Solutions
All entries are due in by the 5th of March.

If you are interested in contributing to this project, please e-mail
dorit@serenityspaces.org or phone 310-928-7689 or 310-854-2078.
This will be a raw, Living Foods Community project and response to the perplexity and chaos that some pre-teens and teenagers feel internally and externally.
