Tell Them What You Think of “Pasteurized Almonds”

Dear brothers and sisters,

People ask us what they can do to save our almonds. We suggest that you write letters to your elected representatives.There is a list below of those who would be willing to listen and have the clout to make a difference. We urge you to write and let them know how you feel about fumigated almonds. Here are some issues you may wish to address:

• The California organic, almond grown by family farmers is the healthiest and sweetest nut. How is it that they destroying this our almond heritage just to serve the needs of a few multinationals?
• Instead of addressing the root cause of the problem — the widespread fecal contamination of the nation's food supply, they are relying upon a technological fix.
• Organic almonds get steamed while conventional almonds get fumigated with propylene oxide. The Environmental Protection Agency recognizes it as a carcinogen and cause of disease, and as a suspected toxicant of the liver and the gastrointestinal, immune, developmental, and respiratory systems.
• Propylene oxide was once added with an eyedropper to the fuel tanks of racing cars . It would help them get off with an explosive start but that has since been banned as too dangerous. Apart from fumigating your almonds it is also used in munitions. You’ll be edified to know that it is currently being used in Afghanistan, in missiles fired from Apache attack helicopters. Pound for pound, it’s the most powerful explosive short of nuclear.
• Why can’t they handle this just as they do raw milk?That is with a label warning of the dire consequences. It might go something like this:

- Beware ! Beware !
His flashing eyes, his floating hair !
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Plant a Victory Garden!

Last month 159,000 jobs vanished. Over the past 12 months the unemployment rolls have risen by 2.2 million. This is only the beginning there is every prospect that unemployment may soon exceed 10%. Millions of US families are being threatened with eviction from their homes, some because they cannot pay their mortgages and others because their landlords cannot pay theirs. This year alone, nearly three-quarters of a million people in the US have been evicted from their homes already. This means that a total of 3 million US families will be either evicted or threatened with eviction by the end of this year.

A report in the Wall Street Journal on October 8th showed that nearly 1 in 6 home owners in the US are "under water", they owe more on their houses than their current value, after house prices have fallen by up to 30% in some areas. This represents 12 million households, or 16% of all US home-owners, a massive increase from 4% who found themselves in this situation two years ago.

"These people have worked their whole lives to have a house and now it's crumbling and it's in ashes and how devastating is that? It's not an American dream, it's an American nightmare."

Brother and sisters, we are at the beginning of a worldwide recession, that much is clear. So far unemployment has been moderate but just wait. The life force within the compels us to ask some questions.Why should our lives be put on hold for a decade, at least, because that's how long the recession will last? Why should over a trillion dollars be spent on lining the pockets of those who created the situation in the first place? Why should they get off scot free while ultimately you have to pay not only in taxes but in the most regressive tax of all, namely, inflation?

In the face of a world that apparently has run out of ideas, we like to suggest that you begin to create a new world by planting a Victory Garden. Plant now and in most areas you’ll have living greens throughout the winter. More than this, your Victory Garden will be an expression of your faith in the people of the land. By transforming your front lawn into a mini-orchard and your backyard into a vegetable garden you are proclaiming that life will triumph.

On one thing, however, all agree, that this country is very much in need of a rebirthing. Deep down inside, you know that it’s up to you to restore and and heal this American earth. No one is going to do it for you. Only you can create genuine change. As Abraham Lincoln truly said, Why should there not be a patient confidence in the ultimate justice of the people? Is there any better or equal hope in the world?
We suggest that you start with a Victory Garden.
